While I am just now beginning to wrap my brain around the awfully ugly philosophy surrounding the music of Nattymari (until now it had been an incomprehensible thorn in my side), I have definitely developed an appreciation for the sheer effortlessness of the intricate and irreverent dismantling of the narrative promulgated by the original music. His tongue-in-cheek system of naming and tagging his work utilizes a fusion of leet speak and ASCII characters, slang dialects that have developed over the past few years in emerging internet sub-cultures. These dialects do not aim to translate english into an entirely different language, they merely transpose various standardized symbols (like and obelus, which looks like a cross) with the letters they look like as a stylized and expressive way of communicating with text. This also serves to make all items tagged with these seldom-used symbols so they cannot be searched for on the internet. No one has a ♥̵̷̸̛̜̞̄́̈́̀̿́̈́̚ button on their keyboard, and so music and other media are often shared through links. This mainly creates a more intense kind of second-underground on the internet, but it also reflects a kind of nihilistic urge in these social structures. Nattymari’s efforts are stretched and dragged in the physical senses of those words. He has coined a new genre of remixes he calls a “[Nattymari] Obliteration”, which is a fairly accurate description of his approach to remixing music. Not only does he mangle the original, he gives his edits esoteric and awkwardly spelled titles, so that to stumble upon his work on youtube is definitely unintentionally and absolutely disturbing. This manipulation of original content, internet culture, metadata, and conceptual art is refreshing and pungent at the same time.
